About India Monsooned Malabar Coffee

India Monsooned Malabar is a unique specialty coffee with a unique character resulting from the unique monsooning process. Harvested Arabica beans are exposed to monsoon winds and humidity for 12-16 weeks, which causes them to lose their original acidity and gain an extraordinary softness and depth of flavor. This is an absolute must-have for any true coffee lover.

What is the monsoon process?

The tradition of monsooning dates back to the British Raj, when coffee transported by sailing ships from India to Europe was exposed to humidity and sea winds for six months. The beans changed color from green to pale gold and acquired a unique flavor. When transportation time shortened following the opening of the Suez Canal, European customers noticed the change in flavor. Therefore, a monsooning process was created that replicates these conditions. The beans are spread out in open warehouses on the Malabar Coast, where they are regularly shoveled and exposed to humid winds throughout the monsoon months, acquiring their characteristic pale gold color and almost doubling in volume.

Flavor profile

Monsooned Malabar is characterized by exceptionally low acidity and a full, creamy body. The flavor is dominated by notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted nuts, and oriental accents of cloves and cardamom. Notes of smoke, tobacco, herbs, and caramel are also discernible, wrapped in a spicy aroma. This coffee has a smooth, deep flavor with earthy, sweet tones and a long, velvety finish. The flavor profile is practically pH-neutral, making it exceptionally soft and delicate.

Origin

The coffee comes from the Malabar region on India's west coast, from plantations located at altitudes of 1,000–1,600 meters above sea level in the states of Karnataka and Kerala. This area is geographically protected under the Indian Geographical Indications Act. Most of the farms are 80–100 years old and are owned by third-generation farmers who, in addition to coffee, also cultivate pepper, cardamom, and oranges.

What is it good for?

Monsooned Malabar is a versatile coffee that excels as an intense, full-bodied espresso with a rich crema. Pour- overs reveal its full complexity and earthy notes. It pairs beautifully with milk-based coffees , where its deep flavor shines through the milk, retaining its oriental character. It also performs perfectly in a moka pot , where the traditional brewing method accentuates its fullness and softness.

For whom?

This coffee is an excellent choice for those seeking unique and original flavors who appreciate coffee without acidity. It will appeal to lovers of oriental, spicy aromas and those who appreciate a full, creamy body and earthy notes. This coffee is for connoisseurs of subtle and delicate essences who want to pause from the hustle and bustle of daily life and savor the moment with a truly unique specialty coffee.
